Surfers Against Sewage coming to Portrush

May 6th, 2008

sas-grass-roots-poster-fina.jpgMore information at www.sas.org.uk

Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) campaigners take to the road next month for a western seaboard leg of The Grassroots Tour.

Each year SAS plan a weeklong tour that visits key watersport sites up and down the country. Over the last few years we’ve been the length and breadth of the country and met some great people that are passionate about protecting and improving their coastal environment for all to enjoy.

This year’s tour takes place from the 12th - 16th May and the venues are as follows:

12th May - The White Lion, North Street, BRAUNTON, EX33 1AJ
13th May - Glan-Y-Mor Inn, Caerfi Road, ST DAVIDS, SA62 6QT
14th May - The Harbour Hotel, ABERSOCH, Pwllheli, LL53 7HR
15th May - The Centre For Contemporary Arts, 350 Sauchiehall Street, GLASGOW, G2 3JD
16th May - The Watersports Centre, East Strand, PORTRUSH

Talks run from 7pm - 10pm.

With our watery ‘playgrounds’ under threat, find out how issues like climate change and marine litter are choking our blue planet, from the clean water campaigners at SAS.

Discover the key pollution issues of tomorrow, learn more about the behind the scenes creative campaigning that’s getting results and watch an inspiring environmental surf documentary!

Richard Hardy, SAS Campaigns Director says: ”If there’s one talk you go to this year as a ‘recreational water user’ then this should be it! (Even it’s 6 foot and offshore!)”

This year’s tour is supported by Patagonia Footwear. Thanks to them we will be raffling off a pair of Patagonia Shoes each night. Patagonia are longstanding supporters of SAS’s campaigning and we’re stoked to have them helping us with this year’s tour. They’ll also be giving away a brand new Eco-board at the end of May to one lucky person who makes it a long to one of the tour nights, so make sure you come along if you want a chance to win one of the most environmentally friendly surfboards out there.

Duncan Holme from Patagonia Footwear says: “Patagonia Footwear is proud to be supporting Surfers Against Sewage and helping us all to think about our environmental footprint”

Portrush Open Surfing Contest this weekend

March 26th, 2008

Surfers from all over Ireland are due to descend on Portrush, Co Antrim on the 29/30 of March for one of the biggest events on the Irish Surfing Association calendar this year, the Portrush Open supported by Troggs Surf Shop and Coleraine Borough Council.

Mayor of Coleraine, Councillor Maurice Bradley said “this event is one of the first in the Borough’s calendar of seasonal events. It’s a great opportunity for the Causeway Coast to compete with other surfing areas such as the southern coast of England and beach areas in Europe . We welcome such competitions to the Borough and the visitors it attracts and wish all those competing ‘safe surfing’ ”

The event is one of the main selection events for the Denny Irish Surf Teams to compete at the European Junior Surfing Championships, World Junior Surfing Championships and World Surfing Games later this year. Junior and senior surfers will compete for twelve different titles in shortboard, longboard and bodyboard disciplines earning valuable points towards team selection.

In the Open division, Fergal Smith (Westport) will be hot favourite having finished last year’s contest season with some great results on the UK Pro Surf Tour, Fergal has spent the winter training in Hawaii and Australia in preparation for selection to the Denny Irish Surf Team to compete at the World Surfing Games in October in Portugal.

Attention will also be on local surfer, John Mc Curry (Ballymena) who will be one of the main contenders for the Longboard title. Bodyboard has traditionally been dominated by the Causeway Coast but in recent years Strandhill has been producing the leading bodyboarders. It will be interesting to see if Martin Kelly (Coleraine) or young Bosco Mc Auley (Portrush) can take a bodyboard title for the Causeway coast.

Easkey Britton (Rossnowalgh) will have an advantage over her competitors in the Women’s division having spent the last couple of winters surfing on the Causeway Coast while studying at Coleraine University .

The event will kick off with heats in the various divisions at 9am on Saturday 29th and run until 6pm . The quarter, semi and finals will be run from 9am to 4pm on Sunday followed by the presentation.
